CHICAGO MEDIA ACTION ALERT: August 19, 2005 http://www.chicagomediaaction.org There are some events of note coming up in the next week regarding Chicago's main PBS affiliate -- WTTW, Channel 11 -- plus a national rebroadcast of a recent CMA event. Details are below. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Two imminent events provide very good chances to mobilize more allies in the fight for Channel 11. ---------- 1. August 20, this Saturday evening! Come to the live(!) Millennium Park broadcast of the WTTW anniversary 'bash'. http://wttw.com/50/ - Bring paper and pen to get contact information from people you will talk to. Bring friends. And signs for the cameras, if you can. - [Some suggestions for signs to make and bring:] "Elites, Affluence, and Advertising!" ... "Community TV, Not Commercial TV!" ... "Stop advertising to children!" ... "Dump WTTW Corporation!" ... "Working Class Media!" ... "Dump the Board!" ... "Journalism, not Crain's and Sirott!" ... "No license renewal!" ... "PUBLIC television, not WTTW Inc.!" ... "Charity for Bank Corporations?" ... "chicago media action DOT org!" ... - Meet up at the northwest corner of the band shell's lawn area at about 7 p.m. The live broadcast special event begins at 7:30 p.m. Millions will be watching. ---------- 2. August 28, Sunday. Come to "The 2nd Annual WTTW Kids Fun and Run" event for kids and families. 9:00 a.m. to Noon at Cannon Drive just South of Fullerton in Chicago~Rs Lincoln Park neighborhood. There will be entertainment and big PBS kid show characters. http://www.wttw.com/funandrun - Many of these families and the general public in the park might want to demand a new Channel 11 licensee with a community board that will do innovative noncommercial programming for kids and families. Channel 11 is supposed to be Chicago's channel for the underserved, a special reserved alternative to the advertiser-controlled other licensees. - Meet up at Cannon south of Fullerton at about 9 a.m. Bring paper, friends, and signs, if you can. We will do our lobbying of the families and the public without paying the $30 fee to run or walk. ---------- Hope to see you there! *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Chicago Media Action makes its Free Speech TV debut on the week of August 22, 2005.
