CHICAGO MEDIA ACTION EMERGENCY ALERT, November 24, 2003 http://www.chicagomediaaction.org Chicago Media Action has been asked to forward the following appeal on behalf of protesters at the recent Free Trade Area of the Americas ministerial in Miami. *** *** *** *** *** *** *** Chicago/FTAA: URGENT Appeal for Legal/Bail Bond Support URGENT APPEAL for Legal/Bail Bond Support: Please Repost Widely! Saturday, Nov. 22: Chicago activists have issued an urgent appeal for bond support and jail solidarity for Chicago activists and others jailed in Miami in the wake of anti-FTAA protests this week. Legal supporters reported earlier today that a number of arrestees who have been released were severely beaten in jail. There are also reports and allegations of sexual assaults in jail, and abuse that some have characterized as torture targetting jailed activists -- particularly people of color. A number of women from Chicago remain in jail, and solidarity activists in Miami are gravely concerned for their well-being. Chicago activists have mounted an emergency fundraising campaign for bail money for the Chicago activists, as well as hundreds of others who remain jailed. Chris Geovanis and Rachael Perrotta are working locally in Chicago to raise funds on behalf of the Ad Hoc Miami/FTAA Solidarity Project. Funds will be wired directly to Miami, first to win the release of Chicago activists, then to support the release of people of color, student/labor activists, Indymedia people, and the larger pool of arrestees. Groups supporting the ad hoc fundraising effort include Chicago Action Medical (one of whose medics was arrested in Miami, and has been subsequently released), the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network, the Student Labor Action Project/Chicago, United Students Against Sweatshops/Chicago, the Chicago Coalition Against War & Racism, Midwest Unrest, Students For Social Justice, and HammerHard MediaWorks. Please support this effort! Chris and Rachael are requesting CASH donations that they can wire directly to legal support workers in Miami. To contribute to this effort, please call Chris directly at 312-446-4939, Rachel at 773-569-0568, or email chris at hammerhard@aol.com.
