Several years ago, the FCC drew up sweeping changes to five media ownership rules, which got blocked by the public. But today, Martin is proposing a revision to a single rule -- the cross-ownership rule which forbids any company from owning a TV station and a newspaper in the same city. Martin is proposing that the rule be amended to encompass the 20 largest cities in America. But even this "small" revision that Martin is offering is bound to trigger a flood of media consolidation, and would let the Tribune company (which has been violating the cross-ownership rule for years) off the hook. Chicago Media Action is joining forces around the country to stop this rule change. We're also planning our own Chicago media protest action, scheduled for Friday, December 7. Look for a more detailed announcement soon. Meanwhile, if you'd like to join in the fight, you can comment to the FCC, and weigh in on a proposed Congressional bill which would override Martin's proposal, right here, right now: http://action.freepress.net/campaign/ownership *** *** *** *** *** *** *** This is an email from Chicago Media Action, a Chicago activist group devoted to media issues.
