CHICAGO MEDIA ACTION ALERT, August 23, 2004 http://www.chicagomediaaction.org Just a few minutes on the phone today can help preserve and strengthen one of the remaining open media outlets in Chicago. We're talking about the fleet of Chicago public access channels, Chicago Access Network Television (CAN TV). The network has spent 2004 mired in funding fights, and as members of this list know, CMA has helped rally support for CAN TV. There is good news: Alderman Bernard Stone has proposed an ordinance to improve the finances CAN TV. The ordinance has passed one key committee and will come to a vote before the Chicago City Council on Wednesday, September 1. We might be guilty of overusing the phrase "now or never", but what happens September 1 might well determine the fate of CAN TV. We may not get another chance like this again. If you haven't voiced your support for CAN TV, please do so now. If you already have, please take some time to do so again. If you live in the Chicago city limits, please take a bit of time right now to call or write your city alderman. Encourage your alderman to vote to pass the CAN TV funding ordinance at the City Council meeting on September 1. The map and list of council members, including contact information, is available online here: http://www.ci.chi.il.us/CityCouncil/index.html To everyone receiving this message, we ask you to contact Mayor Daley and encourage him to support the CAN TV funding ordinance. Contact information is online here: http://www.cantv.org/mayor1.htm For more details and the latest on this matter, you can call CAN TV at 312-738-1400, or visit: http://www.cantv.org If you can attend the City Council meeting on September 1, please do so.
